la caverne de mère - mine all mine

How do they know?

These boys of mine,

That this space is not a place they want to spend their time?

I think it is the books.
My boys would rather be batting a ball, climbing a tree or casting a line.

They are not interested in this thing called design.

Maybe it's the candles, silver, art and flowers.

These

make

them

sneeze.

Maybe it's the fire in the fireplace.

My boys do not like hot one little bit.

They much prefer cold.

Could it be the photos of themselves

that make them shudder?

Never mind, I love being surrounded by them,

and I'm the mother.

What Mama wants,

Mama gets.

Surely it couldn't be the curtains or french doors that draw tightly closed.

Making la caverne de mere ideal for an afternoon doze.

Which is exactly what I think I shall do this very minute.

A little more info and backstory on my mom cave:  The original blueprints for our house had this room as a 2 story library.  We floored over the upstairs part and it's now a mini kitchen in the media room.  I added the fireplace after falling head over heels for a similar room in a Ronald McDonald showhouse here in Charlotte a couple years back.  You can read a little more about that here.

The walls are painted Restoration Hardware Slate (which makes this room truly feel like a cozy cave) and the floors are walnut.  The sofa was a consignment store find and the end tables are from Ikea.  Orange glass lamps and shades are Anthropologie.  The windsor chair was my mother in law's most prized possession; the draperies and sideboard came out of the dining room in our old house.

The fleur de lis mirror over the sideboard, the orange footstool, sea fan on the mantle, the blue and orange silk pillows, and the vases are all from....

wait for it.............

HOMEGOODS.

  9. I have always wanted a little alcove like yours, with the shelves enveloping a comfy sofa. Your room is great -- elegant, feminine, welcoming.

  15. Love your Mom Cave and how cozy and warm it is. The french doors are great for keeping everything out...right? Love the idea of a two floor library...but I'm with you on the wasted space with all those tall ceiling. My foyer in the last house was just a big wast of energy...hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We use to live in Mint Hill and now live in Raleigh. Best of luck in the giveway, fondly, Roberta

  17. Oh my dear... I can see some hot tea, chocolate, a good book, my Bible, and the laptop in that room. You deserve a room... with no boys. :)
